Last week, we had a three way tie for favorite Song of the Week (“SOTW”) between Saigon’s “Come On, Baby”, Radiohead’s “Lotus Flower”, and The Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers”. No one voted for Diddy’s “Coming Home”, which surprised me. Now, the Madness of March is upon us so what could be more fitting for championship week then five certified high seeds in any musical championship tournament? Without further ado, here are my songs of the week.
Rihanna is back ya’ll. She is having a great year with the release of her latest LP, “Loud.” She is back to dominating the pop charts like she always does. It also seems like she has grown up a lot with this new record, and not only personally, but musically. “S & M” is one of the loudest tracks on the album. It was produced by one the hottest new producers in the game, StarGate, and features a blazin verse by J.Cole, one of the hottest new emcee’s on the hip hop scene. This is definitely a song for the clubs or in your headphones while working out.
One of the best things about the state of Oregon is a little group known around the indie universe as The Shins. The Shins are led by singer/songwriter extraordinaire, James Mercer. (Who you may also know as one half of Broken Bells) The Shins burst on to the music scene in 1997 with their debut album, “Oh Invented World.” That album featured two songs “New Slang” and “Caring is Creepy,” that were in a little movie called “Garden State.” That movie broke the Shins into the forefront. Their excellent sophomore LP, “Chutes Too Narrow” features one of my favorite Shins songs, “Mine’s Not a High Horse.” The song has a great groove and is signature James Mercer. The Shins are definitely a band to keep an eye on. They make some of the best music out there. Not a lot of publicity, but really are a good group.
I picked this R & B classic for Wednesday because the NFL labor dispute was due to reach its pinnacle last Thursday before the owners and players union agreed to extend negotiations. We just need a resolution to this whole mess. Aaliyah, can you help us? Can’t we just have football please? I have a hard time hearing that owners are upset about money when they make hand over fist dollars off the players in the NFL. It’s all a big mess to me, but the drama needs to end. I need my team to make some moves in free agency. LOL. Timbaland said it best in this track, “I’m tired of arguing girl…” Get it together, Roger Goodell.
Welcome back Michael Stipe and the gang from Athens, Georgia. It’s been a long time since I heard some really good music from R.E.M. But the boys are back and sounding better than ever on their latest album, “Collapse Into Now.” The album was released on March 7th, and the band has been getting glorious reviews from major publication such as Rolling Stone, Spin, and Pitchfork. I really love “Uberlin,” the third song from “Collapse Into Now.” The song has a great groove, and a chorus that you can sing along to over and over again. Good song. I’m proud to see R.E.M. back in business.
This is my favorite record out right now. I can’t think of a song that I enjoy hearing more, right now, than this record. DJ Kahlil produced this banger for Raekwon the Chef, who got assistance on the track from fellow heavy hitters, Ghostface Killah and Jim Jones. I swear Rae and Ghost got that Jordan-Pippen thing going on. They assist on each other’s records and compliment each other’s styles so much, that they really create the perfect duo. The chorus to this song gets me every time. “Hey lil mama, I got some of that Bon Jovi, You know me, Have you flying in the air, like you living on the penthouse. We on the corner serving that Rock N’ Roll, Rock N’ Roll…” In this song, these three emcess name drop Bon Jovi, Mick Jagger, Pink Floyd, Ozzy, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, and Guns N’ Roses. And who is to say hip hop heads don’t love them some rock n’ roll. Great single from Rae and company, and I was very impressed with Raekwon’s latest album “Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang.” Wu-Tang Clan fans will really appreciate this release from the Chef who comes hard, old skool style, on his latest release.
